The event featured Morton Abramowitz, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, as its keynote speaker. In the course of his distinguished career, Abramowitz has served as the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, as U.S. ambassador to Turkey and Thailand, and as assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research. Abramowitz’s speech, entitled “Southeastern European Challenges to Stability,” focused on economic and political cooperation and development in Southeastern Europe. Noting the encouraging trends in Greek-Turkish relations, Abramowitz stressed the importance of Greek-Turkish rapprochement for the stability of the entire Balkan region. The Vice-President of the Kokkalis Foundation, Niki Tzavella, called the meeting “a major event for democracy and peace in Southeastern Europe.” The Forum represented the third and final part of an educational program that started in March 2001 at Harvard University. Political representatives from the FYROM, Serbia, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and Albania attended the event, creating an opportunity for intra-regional dialogue and cooperation.
