For the past three years the Kokkalis Foundation has helped to sponsor the Institute of International Relations’ annual International Summer Seminar on Conflict Resolution in Hydra. Established in 1992, the event gathers junior diplomats, policy advisors, journalists, young professionals, graduates, and senior undergraduates from around the region for an intensive one-week conference on the pertinent issues of international relations. Admission to the seminar is highly selective. The 2003 seminar, entitled “The Greek Presidency and the External Relations of an Enlarged E.U.,” featured lectures and discussions on variety topics ranging from transatlantic relations in the post-9/11 era to E.U. constitutional issues. A number of prominent diplomats, academics, and regional experts participate in the seminar each year. Past guest speakers have included US Ambassador to Greece Thomas Miller, MP Gerassimos Arsenis of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, European Parliament Member Alekos Alavanos, George Washington University’s James Rosenau, and Richard Falk, of Princeton University.
